This paper studies the videogame player’s process of identification with an avatar during the act of play, and concludes that said process implies the representation of an impotent, less-than-human otherness that would seem necessary for the generation of this ludic identity. The paper discusses the consequences of this phenomenon, given the concentration of videogame production in a few creative meccas and the over-representation of the white male in game avatars. The paper concludes that it’s necessary to devise a way of presenting otherness without de-humanizing, and that this responsibility resides with the videogame industry.
