CHANGES IN THE COURSE OF THE WATERS OF THE CUIABÁ RIVER Changes in the course of the waters of the Cuiabá river

Abstract

In this study we discuss the lives of men and women that for a long time stood up in Rosario Oeste society as fishermen and bring with them their identity, stories and work around the river. By considering the current context of traditional fishing in the city of Rosário Oeste, we seek to reflect about the transition in the way of life of these fishermen and fisherwomen, since this performance goes through environmental, economic, and cultural issues. We question how fishermen and fisherwomen have survived after the operation of the Manso hydroelectric power plant in 2000. Another preponderant aspect is to discuss the occupation process near the banks of the Cuiabá River: on one hand the native riverside dwellers of the region who live off fishing and small plantations, and on the other hand people with purchasing power who intend another way of acting, among them leisure and the profit that the river can provide. The theoretical contribution is based on studies about culture and communication. The methodological procedure was conducted by means of a bibliographic review and field study.
