Narrativas en la era digital: consumo y efectos mediáticos
Vol. 29 No. 124 (2025)

The evolution of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) is generating an unprecedented shift in the communication landscape. Content, formats, and consumption habits have changed substantially to promote the spread and virality of information. In this new ecosystem, narratives are gaining particular relevance, enabling users to interact with immersive environments. Since the emergence of social media, citizens have migrated to these platforms in search of new entertainment spaces, generating diverse narratives that reinforce a participatory culture. To understand all of this, media and digital literacy is crucial for acquiring the skills and knowledge to use these new formats. This monograph aims to showcase the challenges and opportunities offered by audiovisual narratives in the digital context. For example, it addresses key topics such as new digital roles and profiles (influencers) as information channels; the fandom community as protagonists in storytelling; transmediality and its expanding universe; the normalization of harmful behaviors through popular and viral videos; and film criticism via TikTok. The use of Artificial Intelligence as an immersive tool, among other topics of interest, covers the guidelines of this thematic focus. In this sense, it is important to educate society on the responsible use of media and to strengthen critical thinking in pursuit of an egalitarian and democratic community.

Democracy and Media Education
Vol. 29 No. 123 (2025)

The contemporary media ecosystem presents challenges that unfold within media spaces, reflecting society in its organizational dynamics. Increasingly, citizens require media education (Gillmor, 2005). In this context, it is necessary to consider not only technical training but also ethical concerns and the recognition that much of the information disseminated is untrue. This situation has undermined democratic processes, which over the past centuries have evolved to promote peace and harmony among peoples. The problem is not limited to societies labeled as underdeveloped. Countries that identify themselves as developed, such as those belonging to the European Union and the United States, frequently present us with media “truths” that are often radically disconnected from reality. Within these contexts, we can observe the rise of anti-democratic movements promoted by far-right groups, as well as the growth of hate speech voiced by individuals who had never previously defended such positions.

Studies of the communication ecosystem in Ibero-America
Vol. 29 No. 122 (2025)

Communication studies in Ibero-America build a peculiar media ecosystem, as it is the result of a mixture of concepts that present exclusive characteristics of the axis. The ecosystem is characterized by its cultural diversity and presents challenges that lead them to ask “where ecosystemic diversity can go. This has to do with the political scenario of the region, which increasingly coexists with the need to develop media education (Gillmor, 2005). In this context, we must be considered not only for technical training, but also for ethical concerns and the knowledge that this is not true. This is what has affected democratic processes, which have evolved in recent centuries to promote peace and harmony among peoples.

Based on these parameters, we present this call, which has as its interest the debate on the media ecosystem in its various nuances that are connected with studies on democracy and media education, directly or indirectly. To this end, we have defined some thematic axes that surround the subject from the perspectives that we have proposed.

The post-analogue: metamorphosis of material in the digital age
Vol. 28 No. 120 (2024)

Technological progress has always had the power to shape society — its ways of being, acting, and thinking — but also to announce apocalyptic transformations, as is currently the case with the fears surrounding the invasion of AI models in the creative process and even in the intellectual and aesthetic experience of art.
