Abstract

The objective of this article is to understand the social dynamics of a team of semi-professional esports players. Starting from the context of the competitive community of Belém (PA), in the Brazilian Amazon, it intends to undertake a discussion about the process of formation and maintenance of the social fabric among players who engage in professional video game competitions. To explore this scenario, this paper draws on an ethnography conducted with a League of Legends game team between 2017 and 2018. It concludes that the path to competitive progression in the pro-player career is dependent on an active socialization process among players and teams, whose professional ethos negotiates with a range of local actors and forces in the face of challenges toward professionalization.

Doutorando em Comunicação e Informação pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) e mestre em Comunicação, Cultura e Amazônia pela Universidade Federal do Pará (UFPA), com período sanduíche na Universidade Federal da Bahia e Universidade do Estado da Bahia. É especialista em Comunicação Científica na Amazônia pelo Núcleo de Altos Estudos Amazônicos (Naea, UFPA) e bacharel em Comunicação Social, habilitação em Jornalismo, pela UFPA. Membro da Rede de Pesquisa em Jogo e Cultura Política (Metagame), conselheiro do Grupo de Pesquisa em Games da Sociedade Brasileira de Estudos Interdisciplinares da Comunicação (Intercom) e filiado ao Chapter Brasil da Digital Games Research Association (DIGRA-Brasil).
