Media literacy on TikTok: combating political disinformation in the context of the 2024 São Paulo elections Alfabetización mediática en TikTok: combate a la desinformación sobre política en el contexto electoral de São Paulo en 2024

Abstract
This article analyzes the content produced by fact-checking agencies on TikTok in the 2024 São Paulo municipal elections. It is based on the premise that fact-checking organizations are essential agents in exposing falsehoods in contemporary times, operating in non-formal media literacy spaces. Using a hybrid research methodology, the study found that during the São Paulo municipal elections, despite the underutilization of TikTok's native features, fact-checking agencies played a crucial role not only in combating disinformation but also in promoting media literacy among users. They were able to achieve significant levels of engagement, even in an environment predominantly geared toward entertainment. However, the results of this analysis also demonstrate that, to increase the impact of fact-checking initiatives on TikTok, it is necessary to use the platform's affordances more effectively, which favor creative, dynamic, and emotionally engaging content.
