Transmedia Storytelling: The Ancestral Letter in Secondary Education

Abstract
This paper presents some aspects arising from the project "Educational Uses of Transmedia Storytelling". The project aims to better understand the characteristics of the transmedia storytelling and to explore its the pedagogical benefits when it is applied in a formal setting. Transmedia storytelling emerges as a proposal to bring to the educational practice new communicative and cultural forms characterized by new models of production, distribution, consumption and participation, focusing especially on the complex and critical use of multimodal codes (advanced digital literacy). In this research transmedia storytelling refers to the creation of worlds in which multiple means (analogical and digital) are integrated to give coherence to the story. An ad hoc transmedia entitled The Ancestral Letter has been created and implemented in two secondary education institutes with 161 students. The results indicate that this transmedia storytelling is useful to better understand connections between learning contexts, as well as to explore new forms of student’s involvement and the development of cultural competences and digital literacies.
